Budget app complaints: what 4,972 App Store reviews reveal

We read 2,524 negative reviews of six budget apps. Bugs lead, but the product gaps are clear: privacy, intrusive ads, paid upgrades that stop working.

People trust budget apps with their money and their data, so they forgive very little. We collected 4,972 recent reviews of six budgeting and expense tracking apps, read the 2,524 negative ones and counted 2,891 distinct complaints.

Key findings:

  • Bugs make up 56% of complaints, far more than in habit or fitness apps. In a finance app, a sync error or a wrong balance is enough to lose a user.
  • Paid purchases that stop working are a recurring anger: lifetime or ad-free upgrades ignored after an update (50 mentions for Pocket Expense, 32 for Checkbook).
  • Users want their data local and private: a forced account and cloud sync pushed Pocket Expense users away (25 mentions).
  • Outside the US, apps fall short: Dollarwise users in Canada can't link their banks and see balances only in US dollars (50 mentions).

The complaints that point to a product

We set bugs aside here: they are each developer's to fix. The other complaints describe what users look for and don't find.

1. Purchases that disappear after an update (82 mentions)

Pocket Expense (50 mentions) and Checkbook (32 mentions) users paid for a lifetime, Pro or ad-free version, and saw ads come back or features lock again after an update, a reinstall or a new phone.

I have the premium lifetime subscription, ads came back

2. Non-US users left out (50 mentions)

Dollarwise users in Canada can't link their bank accounts, and balances show only in US dollars.

As a Canadian, I cannot link any of my accounts or cards

3. Intrusive ads on every entry (40 mentions)

In the free version of Pocket Expense, full-screen video ads appear when users open the app or log an expense, sometimes with no way to close them.

Every time you try to enter an expense an ad pops up and you have to wait for it to finish

4. A subscription canceller that doesn't cancel (35 mentions)

Rocket Money's main promise is to cancel subscriptions for you. Users say it works only for subscriptions that were already easy to cancel, and it misses recurring charges: one user had 11 and the app found none.

I canceled exactly ZERO subscriptions through this app.

5. Paying monthly for an app meant to save money (30 mentions)

The irony is not lost on Rocket Money users.

you gotta PAY a subscription to manage your SUBSCRIPTIONS

6. No free tier at all (28 mentions)

Dollarwise can't be used, or even explored, without a subscription.

The app is literally unusable without a subscription.

7. Forced accounts and cloud sync (25 mentions)

An update of Pocket Expense required users to register and move their data to the developer's cloud. They wanted a private, offline app.

it NEEDS an option to go back to fully LOCAL / OFFLINE data

What this means if you build a budget app

In finance, trust is the product. The data points to two directions:

  • A private subscription tracker with cancellation guides: it lists recurring charges and explains how to cancel each one, without promising to do it for you. It answers 126 complaints and gets the best score in our ranking, 8/10.
  • A local-only expense tracker with no account: data stays on the phone, sold as a one-time purchase that survives updates. It answers 234 complaints across four of the six apps.

The full report ranks 13 app ideas for this niche, from a classic checkbook register for iPhone and iPad to a budget app built for non-US countries, each with its score, complaints and quotes. The method is explained in how to find app ideas in negative reviews.

Method

  • Sources: public App Store reviews, the most recent ones, up to 500 per app and per country (US, UK, Canada, Australia, France).
  • Analysis: every 1–3★ review is read by an AI model (Claude, by Anthropic), which writes down each distinct complaint. Similar complaints are merged and counted. One review can contain several complaints.
  • Limit: reviews over-represent unhappy users. The counts measure how often a problem is raised, not how many users have it.

FAQ

What are the most common complaints about budget apps?

Bugs come first, with 56% of complaints: in a finance app, any error with balances or sync is noticed. Next come missing features (18%), such as bank linking outside the US or data export, then pricing (15%).

Does Rocket Money really cancel subscriptions?

According to its recent negative reviews, rarely: users say it cancels only subscriptions that were already easy to cancel, and it misses some recurring charges. That complaint comes back 35 times in 500 reviews.

Why do people want budget apps without bank syncing?

For privacy and control. Pocket Expense users left when an update forced an account and cloud sync: they wanted their financial data to stay on their phone.

Is there room for a new budgeting app?

Yes, if it addresses trust: purchases that keep working after an update, data that stays private, no ads in the middle of logging an expense. These complaints come back across several apps.
